Just another rainy Monday in crazy-town!
What's the score??
Remote learning 3 kids-1
Working parent-0
Real talk! It's 10:01 AM and I have been trying to send an email for 2 hours. I have 1 sentence written and i'm pretty sure it doesn't even contain a complete thought! I have been up since 6:30 this morning. I have spent the better part of the morning trying to set my kids up on their remote learning for the day. 4th grade teacher introduced a new app/software, which of course wasn't set up correctly so after going crazy trying to log in, I finally reached out for help. One click of a button and we are on. BUT...to my delight...this app will be used to post numerous videos of my child reciting various things they are working on....who will help him record all of these videos and post them, you ask?!?! While trying to figure this out, I get the Kindergartner working on something that I think will keep him busy for 30 minutes and 5 minutes later he comes running back into my office excited to show me his work! GREAT! Now to find him something else to keep him occupied so I can finish this FREAKING email!! Ok, we'll use one of the 5 reading apps assigned...oh wait...they are all down...likely because every kid in America is trying to use these sites and they weren't built for this! Who am I kidding....I'M not built for this! Fast forward to the 4th grader freaking out because he can't find one of the assignments....back to my office for the 10th time saying...I need to print this...can you help me with this? How do you spell False? Can I watch TV? When can I play video games? Can you email my teacher and ask her about the math assignment? Where is the video i'm supposed to watch about ants? Wait...you have to do an outdoor bug scavenger hunt this morning?!?! WHAT?! And this was all just for 2 of the 3 kids!
The 6th grader is currently on his virtual ELA class until 10:30, yes, 1 1/2 hour virtual ELA Class at 9 am on Monday morning! Let me tell you how excited he is about that!!! This all means i'm in my office worrying he is chatting with his friends in the background (against the teachers wishes) or playing video games in the background or being disrespectful or fill in the blank! There is no IEP in the world that can help with the struggles of remote learning in a house with 2 other siblings when you struggle with executive function and can't independently plan out your day or your assignments, but you're in 6th grade so your teachers (all 6 of them) email you and don't include your parents and both of your parents are working in and out of the house and wait, did I ever send that email?!?! NO! It's now almost Lunch and 2nd grader is well on their way with their work for the day...although he's cranky because he didn't get to finish by lunch time so he could play video games all afternoon (little does he know that wasn't going to happen anyway!)....the kindergartner has done all the hands on work and is now glued to electronic learning apps until Lunch. 6th grader has locked himself in his room with his laptop and is hopefully actively working on assignments that are due today and tomorrow rather than picking the fun ones to work on despite not being due until the end of the week.
And me, well, I'm prepping for a 1:30 call that I can't stay muted for and trying to get as much work done as possible while it's quiet. Did I mention it's pouring out and super windy so they won't get to be outside at all today, which is NEVER fun in a house with 3 boys. I'm sure they'll be ok with my announcement that this afternoon will turn into movie time if they can all stay quiet long enough for me to get my work done!
I hope you enjoyed this. While I think about it, I think, wow what a waste of time writing this, but....it gave me a few moments of release....oh good, the 6 year old just fell out of a chair...well, there's no crying so i'm calling that a win for the morning!
Until next time. Not sure when that will be, BUT, until then!
